Re Visiting Hell

Tuesday and Wednesday I have to accompany Mom for her tests at Neculear Medicine at Royal University Hospital. The whole area of Medical Imaging is a place where John had to go often for testing and for lines to be installed. It is a place of waiting, of tears, of fear and of suffering and a place that I had hoped I would never have to visit again. The thought of it makes me nauseous and apprehensive. I don`t know how I am going to get through this. I just know that I have to. I am going to go and clean the house now and try NOT to think about it. Just don`t think Chris. Don`t think! Life seems to be very cruel to me lately. I wonder why God wants to rub my face in all the pain of the past. Why all this? Why must I have to go and gaze at the field of battle after the war? When will all the horrors end? Life has become a non ending and futile battle against death. There is no furlough in this war or so it seems.

Shameless campaigning

I can say with absolute certainty that I feel not even a hint of shame to do a little campaigning for one of my favorite blogs that I have been following. Momisoides has been nominated for a Scholastic award for best mommy blog. Out of 500 blogs put forward they narrowed down the field to the final ten. She is one of the ten. If she gets through to the final five, she will be featured in Parent and Child magazine. Ummm...she did not ask me to do this but I really would love to see her win so I did it! Eeeeeeeee! Follow the purple links...follow the purplke links....follow the purple links. Ahem...sorry, just my little attempt at some virtual hypnosis. Did it work? No? Close your eyes. Repeat the red words a few more times. There! Away you go to vote.

I was away all last week. I jumped on the bus. I went to help my daughter with the renovations on the new house that they have purchased. It has been so much fun to watch the house come out of the eighties and be turned into a modern bright and fresh home. We got the babies room painted. It is the most beautiful soft shade of pink. The crowning glory in the room is the chandelier with the pink crystals. We were both clapping our hands with glee.

I was expecting to come home and start packing to leave for Seattle this week and to probably be leaving the week after. That was what was supposed to be happening. While I was gone, the people in Seattle decided that they wanted John to do one more round of Velcade, Cyclophosphomide and Dexamethasone. They have proposed that instead of going directly into the donor transplant, they figure that they should do another autologous transplant (using his own cells) and then follow right away with doing an allogeneic transplant (donor cells) . They want to do all of this in Seattle. It is all up in the air at this point. Our doctor is against doing the auto transplant. He is away this week. I think we will be meeting with his associate later this week. We really are confused by all of this change in direction by the people in Seattle. There was no talk of the possibility of doing another auto while we were out there. Both of us are dreading that possibility. It is a very hard thing to go through. It will extend the time we are out there.

The only good news about everything is that we may be able to be here when grand daughter number two is born on April first. My daughter still is having problems believing that this is indeed a girl. Well just a little anyway. It has to do with the date of the C-section. April Fools day! She thinks that maybe....yeah... April fools...its a boy! Oh, one last cute picture! Sammy fell asleep with his head on a ball.

Comfy huh?

Recouperation and Recipe

Getting over this flu has been a slow uphill climb. I have been having sinus problems. I am feeling not to bad this morning. John is finally starting to feel better. He had a pretty rough weekend but did manage to keep himself out of emergency. He had to go for blood work yesterday. The stem cell team has been keeping a close eye on him. He did have to go for a little bolus (I.V.) yesterday because he was a little dehydrated. The nausea is settling and he is able to eat now. Hurray! He is going for a bone density test on Wednesday. He is going for gamma globulin on Thursday and Friday. That should give his immune system a boost. I think the whole thing was a bit of the stomach flu on top of the other flu symptoms. Nothing else showed up.

I am going to post the chicken noodle soup recipe. This is going to be difficult because I don't measure anything. I have made so may pots of this soup over the years.

Mennonite Style Chicken Noodle Soup

8 - 10 chicken drumsticks
12 cups of water ( 1 cup = 500 ml. )
1/2 large onion finely chopped. ( or according to taste)
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbs. star anise
1 chunk of fresh ginger root about the size of a walnut or two medium sized dried roots
3 bay leaves
salt to taste
fresh ground pepper to taste

Bring to a boil then simmer drumsticks and onions in the water in a medium size stock pot until the chicken is ready to fall off the bones. I use drumsticks because they are cheep and I want bones in the chicken. I think that this makes a better stock than boneless chicken.

Remove the chicken from the stock and add all the other ingredients. Simmer for another hour. After the drumsticks are cool remove meat from the bones and add half the chicken. John does not like a lot of chicken in the soup. If you like a lot of chicken go ahead and add all of it. It is simply a matter of taste. I always remove the chicken before adding the spices so they don't take on the flavor of the spices. I make chicken salad with the rest.

If you don't have enough chicken for the stock you can use canned chicken stock. We have done this on occasion. I don't think that it tastes quite as good.

Noodles

6 eggs beaten
2 tsp. salt
4 tbs. milk
4 cups flour

This recipe is doubled. When I make noodles, I usually double the recipe because I can use the extra in other recipes. These noodles are very good served with a cream gravy and Mennonite style farmer sausage. Very high fat meal there but ever so good. Anyway, I digress. Mix that all up into a nice glob of dough. If you have a noodle maker you can proceed to make your noodles. If you do not have a noodle maker you will have to do it the old fashioned way and use some elbow grease. Roll out the dough using lots of flour over and under it. Cut it into strips. Stack the strips in workable piles putting liberal amounts of flour between the strips. Cut the noodles. You cand make fat noodles or skinny noodles. This is a matter of personal preference. LOL Have a large pot of boiling water ready. Shake the excess flour out of the noodles and boil until done. They will float to the top of the pot. Your noodles will look quite rugged if you have to make the hand cut kind but never mind. They are wonderful. Because we live in Mennonite country, I can purchase some reasonable ready made noodles so I rarely make my own anymore. It is a messy buisness. LOL But worth it! John's mother has a noodle making machine so she does give me noodles she has made and dried from time to time. You can dry the noodles you have made if you want. You need a large surface to lay them out on.

It Is A Miricle!

I think that we are starting to see the light at the end of the flu tunnel. Both John and myself are starting to feel much better. My back is improving too! I went from hardly being able to move this morning to hardly even noticing that there is something wrong with my back this evening. This is great because when I tried to roll myself out of bed in the morning, I fell on the floor. I did ice my back a few times today. I think that worked. I should have listened to Becky sooner.

On the lighter side of things. I have been following a program on TLC called "I Can Make You Thin" I find this program amusing and have been posting my take on the program over at Iowa Avenue. I am going to re-post here today and hope it entertains you a little bit. Without further adieu:

I Wouldn't Do Some Of This To My Dog

Who would have thunk it? After watching Paul McKenna's latest program on how to control food cravings I realized he is simply using time proven methods used to train dogs! Yes it is true! He uses positive and negative behavior modification methods. It is basically Pavlov's dog:

To train a positive response in the dog I use a clicker. It goes like this. To prime the clicker simply click then give the dog a treat. Repeat many times. Now the clicker is primed, every time I click the dog expects something nice to come his way. In this way anytime you want the dog to repeat a behavior or you want to reinforce a behavior you you click the clicker. The dog is expecting something nice and will be more inclined to repeat the wanted behavior. It works. I have taught my dog many fine tricks using this method. I do have to overlook the slobber because this method does encourage drooling in the dog.

To train a positive response in a human have the subject think about something lovely like a nice holiday or beautiful scenery. Have the subject squeeze their thumb and middle finger on thier right hand. Repeat many times. Basically you are priming the fingers to act like a clicker and give you a happy feeling every time you squeeze them together.

To train the dog in a negative response: Here is where I suggest that you do not do this to your dog. I am just demonstrating how it would work. Give the dog a small shock on the nose. Ring a bell. Repeat a few times. It will not take long for the dog to associate the bell with the shock resulting that anytime your dog hears the bell he will probably run away or cower.

To train a negative response in a human: Have the subject think of a food that they detest. Have them add other disgusting things to this food. Things like hair, slime from spittoons or worms work well. Imagine mixing all of this together with the food you love and eating it while squeezing together your thumb and middle finger of your left hand. Repeat until you are able to disgust yourself simply by squeezing your fingers. . In theory you should now have developed a negative response every time that you squeeze your fingers together on your left hand. You should run or cower from any food you wish to simply by squeezing your fingers. LOL

Chicken Noodle Soup

What a crummy week. John and myself have cold / flu. While he is feeling much worse than me, I have little energy. Each morning that I get up I hope that I will start to feel better. Each morning I get up feeling exactly the same. Now that we seem to be having the never ending winter we also get to have the never ending cold.

Yesterday I took John in to get blood cultures and chest X-ray. We have not received any phone calls from the cancer center so I sure hope that it means that he does not have pneumonia or anything else cooking. He still has a mild fever. That does not seem to be quite as bad today. He is feeling discouraged. He wonders if he will ever feel healthy again. It is hard to be cheerful when you have a fever.

Today my back started hurting. There is no rhyme or reason for this. I can hardly bend down and pick up anything from the floor. I hope that goes away fast. I really don't need this.

I made chicken noodle soup. Maybe that will fix everything. It sure tasted good! I make the good Mennonite kind. It is seasoned with Ginger Root...Cinnamon Stick...Star Aniseed. The smell alone is therapeutic.

I think that I will spend the rest of the day either reading or knitting. I still have not finished the sweater but am getting so close. I am sorry that I don't have anything very entertaining going around in my head today. This I guess is as good as this post is going to get so...I shall just hit post!

Hang On To Your Hats

We are home. We had a nice trip. The roads were good on the way home. We caught colds. John is sleeping. I feel better today than I did last night. Last night I had the blankets piled on, a hot water bottle in bed with me and I still could not get warm and I ached all over. So far John seems to be weathering this cold O.K. I hope that continues. Sam and Ben are sick today. Poor guys.

John went to his appointment at the cancer center today. He is doing good. We did have a bit of a bomb dropped on us today. Because his Multiple myeloma is high risk to recur Dr. V. has decided the best route to take at this point is to do a donor transplant. Hang on to your hats folks. All you siblings out there are going to be notified and will be tested to see who is a match. If there is a match the transplant will take place in Seattle in approximately half a year at the at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. They don't like to wait until the cancer recurs before doing this. Even though they do transplants in Calgary apparently they are not taking any new cases there at this time.

We will have a lot of things to organize for this. We need to get passports just in case we have to fly and cannot drive there. I need to get my permanent resident card so I can get back into the country. My citizenship application will take at least a year to process. I have to get an American passport so we will get to work on all of that ASAP!

We will have to live in Seattle for about three months so we will have to rent. I went on line today and figure that it will cost about 1200 to 1400 dollars a month for rent. Pray that I can get in a lot of extra hours of work this summer.

We may have to make more than one trip to Seattle. I am hoping that we will be able to avoid this scenario but sometimes they have you come in to consult then go home then come back for the transplant. I feel numb. Somehow we will get through all of this.

Back In The Hospital

John has been readmitted due to breathing difficulties (feels better with the oxygen on), fast heart rate (they have that down) and fever (receiving IV antibiotics) This means another week stay for him. He is feeling very discouraged.

Final Stage of Treatment

John has been admitted into the hospital and the final stage of his treatment for Multiple Myeloma has begun. He received a large dose of chemical therapy this morning. They allowed him to come home for the afternoon and evening. He may be able to come home on a day pass tomorrow as well. Monday he will receive his stem cells back. This is a approximately two hour procedure. The transplant team will be in the room for the whole two hours. He will have to stay in the hospital for about four more weeks. I will probably not be posting here very much during this time as it is just too hard for me to focus on anything else. I will be keeping people updated on the John Braun Page which is linked on the side bar. I will keep visiting my blogging friends and family blogs. Hint...Hint... come on you guys...Keep the posts coming...you wouldn't believe it but reading your posts helps me de-stress! (I don't think that is a word) You are all a real blessing to me.

Rats! Out come the chickens!

Somehow over the holidays I have managed to catch a cold. So far John is O.K. , has no symptoms and everybody else in the house seems to be fine as well. That is good. I have exiled myself to my room and only come out if I am wearing a mask and have sanitized my hands. Ben asked me why I was dressed like a Doctor. I told him I was trying to make the cold stay in my nose and not go anywhere else. He looked at my like I had lost it. I told him that it would not be nice if the cold in my nose got into his nose and made him sick too. That seemed to make a little more sense to him although he still had that "are you sure you know what you are talking about" look to him. Jonathan and Melissa and Noah seem to be doing fine and think that they should be able to come over by Sunday. I hope that I am better to by then and can enjoy a Christmas celebration with them. Anyway I slept a good portion of the day away. I have a good book to read. I am keeping my feet warm and drinking a lot of Chai tea. So soothing!

Chris has left the Coop...for a little while

I will not be posting here for the next week or so. John has been admitted to the hospital due to the combination of fever and being neutropenic. I will be posting on the John Braun Page so I will keep everybody updated daily maybe even twice daily if there is any news to report.

As Good As It Gets vs Better And Better

I made my page yellow! That is much better than boring white.(that is, my page at NaBloPoMo) That is about all that I know how to do as far as page design goes. Do I want to know how to do more? Probably not, or I would go and work at it. Maybe later. I think I will be happy just to change the color of the page when I get bored. Right now it is as good as it gets...

I am sad that our time here is soon to be finished. I have made some nice friends here at NaBloPoMo. I did not know anything about blog surfing or that people made blogging friends. Now that I have retired I have been somewhat isolated. So much of my time was at work! I have joined the Red Hat society and am going to make some more friends. Tomorrow I am going to meet the group for the first time. Our outing involves bake sales...craft sales...tea...wine tasting (I will pass)...lunch...and ending up a Wilson's Greenhouse to see their Christmas stuff. I have been named Baroness Beasely...has a good ring to it. Making friends...I will work at it... Some thongs can get better and better! LOL That should read THINGS... A thong cannot get better! They cannot be good at all! LOL

In answer to Margaret: I will not have the cat scan results until I see the ENT doctor Dec.4. He already warned me that they probably can't do anything about the smell disorder. I am starting to think that I may have done the damage when I fell down the stairs and clunked my head. He said that the most common cause of this type of disorder (when odors are altered) comes from head injury. You know, after a while anything can come to seem normal. You get used to it. Sorta. It is probably going to be as good as it gets...

Jonathan, Melissa and Noah came over this evening. Everybody is finally healthy. We were not able to see them for about a whole month. When that little guy walked in the door (sorry Noah's mom and dad, your competition is pretty tough...you just can't measure up to Noah's standard of cuteness!) my heart just melted. Sigh...better and better? Nothing can be any better than when one of my grandkids show up!

Change of plans...John feeling pretty bad today and I am low on energy so I am going to stay home and keep at least one eye on him...I wouldn't enjoy myself at all...maybe I will go over to the church and see how the ladies art projects are going ... go to the post office and mail a couple of parcels ... clean the basement ... maybe ...

Come And Let Me Bore You

I think I will Make this a newsy kind of a post. This post will probably have the least potential to bore the people who know and put up with me on a regular basis.

Two chickens

Today I went for my C.T Scan. I am pleased to inform you that they did not kill me. I am alive...Woo Hoo! Before the scan they bring you a questionnaire to fill out and sign. They also explain that you have a one and 200,000 chance of having a life threatening reaction to the iodine media that they are going to inject into you to enhance the scan. They try to calm your fears by informing you that they have all the necessary equipment close at hand to revive you if this should happen! Then they tell you that you will feel very weird when they inject you...you will feel a warm flush and may even feel like you wet your pants!! I kid you not! LOL Lets say I was glad for the heads up!

Five large chickens and two tiny chickens

After the scan John and were off to Rotten Ronnie's for coffee and an Egg McMuffin (I was not allowed to eat or drink prior to the scan)...then away to the Cancer Center for Monday morning blood work. NEWS FLASH...NEWS FLASH...John just informed me that someone has to cut his fingernails and that he needs to shave...LOL! Oh...how exciting our lives are! Anyway...He can cut his own fingernails. From there we went to Crappy Tire...but a bunch of good junk...lights for the tree (I spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to make the old lights work)...candy cane lights for the yard...and I don't remember but my purchases brought this response from John: "YOU BOUGHT ALL THAT?" I said "YA" Are you bored yet? Hmm?

One chicken and a cow and four chicken burner covers

From Crappy Tire ...Wal Mart...form Wal Mart...Liquidation World...now we are really living! Bought some more Pick-Up-And-Reach-Tools. I bought some wrapping paper.

One more chicken

After Liquidation World we went to the grocery store. I will spare you the grocery list. Did I hear you say "thank-you?"...Well...you are very welcome!

Four more chickens

We left the house at 7:00 a.m.and got home at 2:00 p.m...got everything sorted out 3:00 p.m...let the dog out...LOL...are you sleeping? WAKE UP ...I am not quite finished yet!

One chicken and a chicken hiding over on the light switch plate and two more down the hall I forgot about

Angela has come over for supper and is going to help me decorate the tree. I bet you are wondering "Why all the stupid chicken pictures?" Well I was wondering "Do you think that I need anymore chickens? Like for Christmas? Do you think that would be O.K.? Dare I ask?" I am not going to check for spelling and punctuation. I am tired, bored and falling asleep...zzzzzz

It Is a Crying Kind of a Day

I am crying because I am happy. My daughters have acquired third row, center seats for The Phantom of (you guessed it) The Opera! I am crying because it doesn't come to our city untill May.

I am crying because I feel inadequate today. I have been doing some mental innovatory of my life and all the unfinished or failed projects and activities. I feel like a loser. I have had a life long tendency to be all "gung-ho" start something well...and phtt...finish poor or not at all. Here is a list of what I suck at:
  1. Speed Skating: I think the only race that I won took place in Leadville Colorado. The poor shlob that I beat had never even wore a pair of speed skates before. We were the only skaters in this race. I received a medal for this! Now..this activity shouldn't really count because technically I did not select this activity for myself. It all had to do with the desires of my father. I have put it on the list because as an adult I thought it would be a good plan to try and skate in some "Masters" races. I didn't even manage to skate in one! Oh...sigh...
  2. Scuba Diving: I excelled in the theory studies and aced the written tests. I managed to pull of the lessons in the swimming pool even though I had to dig deep. I did not get my certification because I did not have the ka-ho-nas to do the required 60 foot open water dive. Oh...sigh...sigh
  3. Woodcarving: I do not have what it takes to be a real woodcarver! I did go to two different seminars and a class to try to find my niche. Seminar one was about chip carving. This type of carving gave me carpel tunnel for three weeks. In class one we carved a flat polar bear. I made it into a fridge magnet. I am not interested in carving fridge magnets. Seminar two was with a master relief carver. He told me that I had real problems with depth and perception. I found the whole exercise in seminar two difficult and confusing. Oh...mediocrity...I will have to settle. I guess that means I can keep sandpaper in my tool kit and continue happily using my improper technique. Sigh...sigh...
  4. Scrapbooking: I have already beaten this topic to death.
  5. Hairdressing: My "career" lasted a grand total of two months. The pay was poor and you guesses it.....
  6. Cooking: My idea of a well prepared meal consits of fried meat, toast and ketchup. I have trouble of sticking to recipes because I am deluded and think I can do it better. Ask John about the pot of beef barley soup I made last week.
  7. Painting: In over half of century of life I have managed to produce a grand total of two. I do not have the stick-to-it-ness to develop my desire to be a painter. Sigh...sigh
I am crying because I think the sweater I have been working on has a woonky pattern and I don't think it is going to work out well.

Why do I feel so sad today? All of the above?? I think "all of the above" is a ruse of my sub-conscious to mask the real source of why I feel so sad today. Being funny today just rings hollow. I had intentions of not blogging about Johns' (He is the love of my lie) cancer on the Coop. I wanted to keep this a place where I could escape for a few moments and let life be something different than it is...you know...change reality for a while. I have come to the realization...it is O.K. ...to be sad today. I think I will go and have a nap...

And The Winner Is.....

We just got home from the steak night at the Odeon. Well that is not entirely true. It is just about 11:00 p.m. I can't sleep because I had too long of a nap this afternoon. We had a nice time. The supper was good and the company great. I WON the grand door prize. It is a humongous basket of spa stuff. It was so heavy my arms got sore toting it to the car. I hardly can wait until my smell capabilities return. For those of you who don't know, everything smells the same and it is not nice at that. I read on line that someone actually had the same thing but everything smelled good to her. Most people with this report bad smells. Why is that? Why can"t it be the other way around and the majority of people report smelling good smells and one person reporting bad smells. Anyway Dr. W. is sending me to an eye ear and nose guy. I hope it doesn't take too long. It is hard to cook when the food smells the same as my deodorant and the same as dirt!!! It is sooo weird. The only positive is that I can't smell the dog farts or the sewer stink that hits our town on occasion.

Accupunture/trips/surgical insanity

Good Morning

Here I am in Dorkton instead of Lloydminster. We decided not to go to Lloyd and not to waste all that money there. We would much rather spend money to come here. John got a name for an accupuncturist in Saskatoon. He will try that guy next week. I hope it works out as good as Lloyd for him. The guy in Saskatoon has also been trained in China. A bunch of years ago everybody was excited (at the hospital) because they were going to train the anaethesiologists in accupunture and use that for some surgeries. They saw some films of them doing this in China. They do it all the time there. It didn't take off here because they had problems getting people to do it. Duh! Its too freaky. Think about it. John and I always wake up earlier than everybody else and sneak around. This always involves Tim Hortons. I hope I roll up a prize. I'm sooo excited. Here goes.......and.....Please play again......reessayez s.v.p......rats...
not even a lousey muffin......no plasma t.v.....no soup for me!

Home With The Chickens

I'm home sick. I Didn't let anybody come over for my birthday last nite because I was too sick and grumpy. Some people must really love me because if you know me at all you would know that it was a very brave thing to offer to subject yourself to me when I don't feel good. This morning when I was having my shower to get ready for work my nose started to bleed. This was a very confusing thing to have happen as I was not very awake yet. When your nose bleeds in the shower you don't actually feel it bleed because you face is already wet. You see it bleed! This was the deciding factor in staying home. Every time I blow my nose it bleeds. I blow my nose alot because I have a cold. I didn't sleep well last nite. I woke up every hour because my mouth was paper dry. It was paper dry because I have to breath through my mouth because my nose is plugged. I think I will add some moaning and groaning here so my kids will be able to appreciate my suffering.

MOAN... MOOOAN...WHINE..WHINE..WHINE...

.GROOOOAN!!!!!!
